1673, Mexico

Two little boys give their mother (Marisol Ramirez) a necklace that she says she will treasure forever. She and her husband dance with their sons till the youngest youngster opens his eyes and realizes that everyone has left. He walks about, shouting out to his mother and brother, only to see the lady drowning his brother in the river. The small kid flees, only to be apprehended by his mother and dragged into the river.

1973, Los Angeles


Anna Tate-Garcia (Linda Cardellini), a social worker, is getting her children Chris (Roman Christou) and Sam (Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen) ready for school, but they miss the bus. At work, Anna overhears her employer asking coworker Donna (Irene Keng) to check on Patricia Alvarez's (Patricia Velasquez's) house, a mother with two sons, Tomas (Aiden Lewandowski) and Carlos (Aiden Lewandowski) (Oliver Alexander). Anna, their caseworker, learns that the boys have gone missing from school. Anna persuades her boss to let her go check on them because she knows them better.
