The wealthy "earn" decades at a time (remaining at age 25), effectively immortalizing themselves, while the rest beg, borrow, or steal enough hours to get through the day. When a man from the wrong side of town is wrongfully accused of murder, he is forced to flee with a beautiful hostage. The duo's love becomes a powerful tool in their war against the system as they live minute by minute. 

Humans are genetically modified in a future society to stop aging at the age of twenty-five, after which a clock with one more year for each individual is activated. Time is money, and the wealthy in New Greenwich are immortal, whilst the poor in time zones are exploited and forced to live with just a few hours or days, and must work, borrow, beg, or steal to exist. Thieves steal time, and timekeepers maintain society in order. When Will Salas saves the wealthy Henry Hamilton from a gang of robbers, Henry reveals that he is 105 years old and sick of living because there is no need for deaths in the unfair society.
