1927, New York
The American Ministry of Magic has imprisoned infamous evil wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp). Seraphina Picquerism (Carmen Jogo), President of MACUSA, watches over Grindelwald as he is moved to London with one of her subordinates, Abernathy (Kevin Guthrie). As they go to the skies in a chariot drawn by Thermals, it becomes clear that Grindelwald and Abernathy have swapped places, as Abernathy has always been faithful to Grindelwald. Grindelwald diverts the Thermals' route as Abernathy fills the wagon with water. They murder two guards, but one, Spielman (Wolf Roth), survives. Grindelwald then sets out to find the rest of his followers.

As they go to the skies in a chariot drawn by Thestrals, it becomes clear that Grindelwald and Abernathy have swapped places, as Abernathy has always been faithful to Grindelwald. Grindelwald and his followers gather at a private apartment to plan their journey to get Credence. They discover a male kid in another room next to them who is oblivious to what is going on. Carrow (Maja Bloom), one of Grindelwald's disciples, is given the Killing Curse by Grindelwald.
When Newt departs the Minstry building, he discovers a glove tapping him on the shoulder and pointing to a meeting spot on top of a skyscraper. He snatches the glove and is sent to meet his former professor, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law). They meet discreetly because Dumbledore assigns Newt to find Credence in Paris since he may be in danger or a risk to others. He also sends a card with the address of a safe house in Paris for Newt. Newt is hesitant to accept this task, but Dumbledore tells him that it must be him because Dumbledore cannot move against Grindelwald.
ewt returns home to his assistant Bunty (Victoria Yeates), who has scrapes on her arm from handling his Kelpie. He hears a noise coming from his room after dealing with the baby Nifflers and the Kelpie. Newt is surprised to find Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) and Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol) in his room, having appeared all the way from New York. Newt is surprised that Jacob remembers him despite being Obliviated, but Jacob explains that Queenie informed him of the bad things.
Newt is also dismayed to learn that Tina (Katherine Waterston) is not present and has been dating another Auror as a result of a magazine error that caused her to assume Newt was engaged to Leta rather than Theseus. Queenie has bewitched Jacob to make him love her, and she grudgingly agrees to let Newt remove the magic. Despite his displeasure at being enchanted, Jacob follows Queenie out of Newt's residence to tell her she didn't need to use magic on him since he already loved her. However, they disagree because to the rules prohibiting magical persons from having relationships with muggles/no-majes. Queenie reads Jacob's mind and overhears him calling her insane, so she abandons him. He reappears
