Purple heart
Summaries
PURPLE HEART is about a clean-up operation following a botched clandestine mission. Colonel Allen is the head of a new, elite military force built for clandestine operations. His first assignment was to murder Saddam Hussein ahead to the start of the Iraq War in 2003. Sgt. Oscar Padilla is the sniper assigned to the operation to kill Hussein.
Unfortunately, the plan is jeopardized when Padilla is kidnapped and tortured by Iraqis. Padilla is eventually freed, but his trauma has left him seriously scarred. Back in the United States, he escapes from the military hospital where he is being treated. He is considered dangerous because of what he knows about our illegal attempt at political assassination.
Colonel Allen, as the commander of the team that trained Padilla and carried out the task, is given special orders to go find Padilla and "fix the problem" permanently. Allen hopes to persuade Padilla to return. The film raises questions about the moral obligations of using military force, the methods we use to train our own soldiers, and the decisions we want to make as a society regarding political assassination.
